The UK, where I’m from, is not a country that lives in the shadows of others when it comes to technology & marketing. The British like to think they are as up-to-date as the Americans & Japanese.

In terms of social media popularity, it’s growing extremely fast in the UK. According to Simply Zesty 85 percent of the population is online (Thats 52 million people online!); they spend over 6 hours on social media sites every month, nearly 60 percent of them read blogs and 64% have their own profile on a social network.

This insightful “infovideo” gives us some really insightful data behind social networking popularity in the UK. The facts and figures used in the video are relative to the UK population but can almost definitely be used in relation to other countries.

These numbers need to be substantiated. They’re very impressive and could be really useful to share with colleagues but what do I say when I’m asked what the sources are and how the calculations were made?

If 85% of the population is already online – then its a really small step to getting emails from all friends with photographs tagged on facebook. :-)
